Solar Gard WingSafe Black Dot: Purpose and Appearance

Solar Gard WingSafe Black Dot is the black dot pattern in the WingSafe bird safe window film range. It is the most effective of the three, with an American Bird Conservancy Threat Factor of 4. It is also the only WingSafe pattern with test results on reflective glass. Manufacturer code SK0314WSBPFBD. The film has a 2.0 mil (50 micron) gauge and an 11 mm dot pattern. It carries a ten year manufacturer warranty. Black markers give maximum contrast on clear glass, which helps birds see the pane and cuts the risk of bird strikes.

Published Performance

The manufacturer publishes 89% visible light transmission, 10% exterior visible reflectance, 10% interior visible reflectance, 17% total solar energy rejection, 1% glare reduction, a solar heat gain coefficient of 0.83 and a winter U factor of 1.04. The film also blocks 99% of ultraviolet.

Those figures come from the 1/8 in (3 mm) clear single pane column of the manufacturer’s table. Thicker glass and double pane glazing perform differently. The manufacturer measured the figures on its own stated test glazing, so use them to compare films. Actual results vary with the glass you install the film on.
